JOWAI/SHILLONG: Police on Friday night thwarted an attempt to smuggle cattle from a village in Amlarem civil sub-division in West Jaintia Hills into Bangladesh.
Amlarem SDPO Jason Mairom said five cattle worth Rs 1 lakh were seized at Syndai village, a few kilometers from Muktapur.
Mairom said two smugglers were on their way to Muktapur from where they were planning to cross the border.
The men, however, escaped.
The cattle will be handed over to the customs in Dawki.
A number of cases of cattle smuggling to Bangladesh have been reported in the State in the last few months.
The BSF and the State Police have taken several steps to ensure that cattle smuggling o Bangladesh in border areas of the State is restricted.
