SHILLONG: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the State Education department to submit a detailed report on the dismal condition and the sorry state of affairs of Kiang Nangbah Government College in Jowai.

The   Committee on   Tuesday summoned the Secretary of the Education Department, WR Lyngdoh besides the officials of the State PWD   to seek   an explanation on why the boys’ hostel of the college has not been completed till date.

The Committee was informed by the officials that the physical progress of the project is 60 percent and the contractor had stopped the work due to non-sanction of funds.

The project cost was Rs 1. 12 crores and   the officials informed that the work has just started for the   remaining portion of the   hostel and a sum of Rs 2 crore has also been sanctioned for the extension of the college building.

Apart from the incompletion of the boys, hostel, the Committee was furious over the non-functional Girls’ Hostel though the building has been completed a year ago.

The Committee also expressed its reservations over the exodus of teachers from the college saying    seven out of 15 teachers in the morning classes have already resigned as they are being paid a paltry amount of Rs 5000 per months   besides there are no teachers in   English and Mathematics subjects in Class XI and XII. The morning shift of the college has around 1300 students.

“The condition of the college is unsatisfactory and is in a dismal stage,” chairman of the Committee, Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after the sitting of the committee.

According Lyngdoh, the Committee was also disturbed by the fact that 26 teaching staff and 9 non -teaching who are working against non-sanctioned post have not been paid their salary since October last year.

“The Secretary could not reply many of our queries and hence we have asked them to submit a detailed report,” Lyngdoh said

Interestingly, the College has already submitted a proposal to the State Government to sanction 35 posts.

“All the revelations indicate that there is total lack of coordination between the College, Directorate and the department,” Lyngdoh added
