SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said the state government was in talks with the Union government to uplift rural areas in Meghalaya.
“Ranikor and South West Khasi hills are places that encounter many problems. The state government is finding out ways and means to live up to the aspirations of the people like the initiative of Meghalaya Piggery and Livestock Development Mission,” he said while inaugurating the administrative unit at Ranikor on Thursday.
Speaking on road development, he said road connectivity would get better with the implementation of the Special Accelerated Road Development Programmes for North East, for which the state has tied up with the Centre.“The first will be the Shillong-Nongstoin-Rongjeng-Tura Road which is over 272 km and the funds are pegged at Rs 3000 crore,” Sangma said.
“All capital districts will be connected with the neighbouring road with a two-lane road. Mawkyrwat will get the by-pass from Lad Mawreng till Ranikor with a total length of 109 km,” he added.
Sangma added that Baghmara is already connected to NH 62 and the total length of Ranikor to Baghmara and other places is not more than 400 km.
Praising the tourism potential of South West Khasi Hills District, the chief minister, who also handles the tourism portfolio, said there were beautiful places in and around the district that add to its potential.
