Self-discipline, awareness key to avoid road mishaps: HRD Lyngdoh

Tura: The Road Safety Advocacy on the theme “Your Safety, secures your family- Be cautious on Roads” was held at SMELC, Dakopgre, West Garo Hills Tura on Wednesday where Meghalaya Transport Minister, H D R Lyngdoh graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, H D R Lyngdoh highlighted the safe monitoring tips and safety measures which greatly contributes to road safety and thereby preventing the loss of precious lives due to road accidents. He further asserted that self-awareness and self-discipline is one of the most important way to avoid road accidents.

Lyngdoh suggested the officials of Public Works Department (Roads) to take proper care of the roads and also to take precautionary measures to remove hanging boulders on national highway which poses a great risk to commuters while travelling.

Stating the fear psychosis of the people to help victims of road accident due to questions raised by police personnel, Lyngdoh informed that the Supreme Court of India has introduce the protection of good samaritan which has been issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).  The purpose of a good samaritan is to provide legal protection to bystanders who come to the aid and rescue victims of road accidents, he added. Further, he urged everyone to obey the rules of the road and contribute to the safety and security of the people of the region.

During the function, the chief guest also launched the Vahan 4.0 and Sarathi 4.0 for the districts of Garo Hills region. It may be mentioned that Vahan 4.0 and Sarathi 4.0 is an online based software application for registration of vehicles and issuance of driving license which is aimed to improve the existing system. The application has been designed and developed by National Informatics Centre, Transport Division, New Delhi.

The chief guest flagged off a bike rally which aims to create awareness on safety and security of pedestrians as well as commuters while on the road.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. M G R Kumar, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Elliber Marak, District Informatics Officer, South Garo Hills, S K Marak, District Transport Officer, Tura and S D Shira, District Transport Officer, Baghmara.

The programme was organised by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura in collaboration with the office of the District Transport Officer, West Garo Hills district.

The function was also attended by Israel Ingty, Commissioner & Secretary, Transport department, S B Marak, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura, S G Momin, President Nokma Council, Tura, senior citizens, officials of various departments of the district, officials of transport department from all districts, teachers, students and representatives from various drivers’ associations.
