HNYF condemns funeral conflict
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) has requested the Dorbar Shnong of Ïng Syiem Mylliem and Seng Khasi to resolve the conflict. In a press statement, the organisation disagreed with the protests that took place on August 11 in which people took up placards and shouted slogans while the body of Seng Khasi elder, Kulam Nongrum was being carried for cremation.

SBI manager files FIR against fraud cheque
SHILLONG: The Branch Manager of SBI, Malki Dhankheti, filed an FIR into an alleged attempt of fraudulently transfer fund. Anootpal Ray, the Branch Manager has lodged a complaint that on August 10, a cheque for Rs. 6,60,000 drawn by G Nongrum was deposited by Mihpli Shabong in attempt to fraudulently transfer fund. The cheque belongs to Weles Thabah and signed by G Nongrum.

Truck driver killed in road mishap
SHILLONG: One person died in a road accident on the NH 44 in East Jaintia Hills. Police said that the mishap occurred on August 15 around 1 pm, between two trucks (AS-01-EC-7834 & NL-01G-6467) at Umtyra village NH-44 (EJH). As a result, driver of truck (AS-01-EC-7834) died on the spot.

Eight coal-laden trucks detected
SHILLONG: Cases of illegal transportation of coal in violation of NGT order continues unabated in the State. Ri Bhoi police on Wednesday detected eight coal trucks, which were carrying coal illegally in violation of the NGT order. Six persons have been arrested in this connection, police said. The trucks carrying illegal coal were seized from different places like Byrnihat, Umroi and Umiam in Ri Bhoi district. It may be mentioned that countless number of trucks have been seized and many truck drivers have been arrested in recent past for violation of the NGT order.

Miscreants attack forest dept vehicle
SHILLONG: Miscreants pelted stones at the Forest department vehicle at Mawiong, GS Road on August 10. D N War, Range Forest Officer, Shillong North Range lodged a complaint that on August 10 around 2.10 am, miscreants pelted stones at the department vehicle (ML-01-5788) while on checking duty for illegal transportation of forest products at Mawiong, GS Road opposite MeCOFED. The driver of the vehicle Iohbok Kyrsian sustained injuries.

House collapses as pile of mud falls on it
SHILLONG: A house in Ri Bhoi collapsed on August 14, however, no casualty or injury was reported. The house of a lady, Sohbar Kharthangmaw, resident of Shnong Sohkyndur, Umlaren, collapsed allegedly after a pile of mud that was accumulated while the construction for four lanes was underway. The huge pile of mud, which reportedly resembled a hillock plunged due to heavy rains, at the house of Kharthangmaw.

Man commits suicide in SWKH
Mawkyrwat: A man of Jakrem village, 5 km from Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District, committed suicide by hanging himself in his own house. The incident took placed on August 14, when the victim, Dingstarwell Wahlang (37) hung himself at his own residence, SP H.G. Lyngdoh informed,t Accordingly inquest was conducted over the dead body and it was ascertained that the cause of death is purely a suicidal one and there is no suspicion of any foul play into the incident, the SP said. He also said that the relatives of the deceased had prayed for Post-Mortem Exemption and after receiving Court Order, the body was handed over to the relatives for the last rites.

Officials missing from offices in GH
SHILLONG: Following the lackadaisical approach of employees of PWD roads , A.chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) sought action against them from the Government. In a statement on Wednesday, the Forum said that it had made six visits for some official purpose but each visit went in vain due to absence of several officials in Tura North Sub-Division II, PWD Roads, Tura North Sub-Division III, PWD Roads, Tura North Sub-Division (NEC), PWD Roads and Water Resource Department, Sub– Division Phulbari, West Garo Hills. The officials neglect their duties despite enough remuneration from the government, the Forum said, adding that only the Chowkidar was present in the office and even the sub-divisional officers were absent. Despite the positive initiative from the local MLA, the situation has not changed, the Forum said. It added that since intervention of the government is limited, the only solution to this is introduction of biometric attendance system. “It is also a matter of concern that no sub divisional officers pertaining to different departments are stationed at Phulbari despite proper accommodation and good quarters”, the Forum said. This induces a sense of carelessness on the part of the employees at lower levels since accountability is missing at all levels.

Relief sought for Baghmara flood
SHILLONG: All Achik Youth Federation, Baghmara, South Garo Hills has urged the chief minister Mukul Sangma to provide relief to the flood affected villagers in the district. Besides the loss of property, the paddy fields were destroyed due to the flood and the government should adequately compensate the residents, the Federation said in the letter addressed to the chief minister on Wednesday.

Programme on cleaning drive concludes
NONGPOH: The office of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Nongpoh as part of National programme on Swachta Pakhwara (A fortnight Cleaning Drive) observed the two weeks cleaning drive in several parts of Ri Bhoi district.The two National Youth Volunteers of NYKS were deputed in each Block of the District for mobilising youth, Seng Kynthei, youth clubs for spreading the message of cleanliness to the interior part of the District so that the aims and objectives of Swachta Abhiyan could be realised as mandated by the Government. The Swachta Pakhwara started from August 1-15 on which the volunteers have mobilised several villages in the District by taking up pledge, organised cleaning drive, household visits for distributing pamphlet on Open defecation free (ODF), organised Marathon in order to sensitise the public on the importance of cleanliness. The SwachtaPakhwara concluded on Wednesday with the culmination of activities at Khweng Village, in Bhoirymbong area.

Road Safety Advocacy held in Tura
TURA: The Road Safety Advocacy on the theme ‘Your Safety, secures your family- Be cautious on Roads’ was held at SMELC, Dakopgre, West Garo Hills Tura on August 16, where Meghalaya Transport Minister, H D R Lyngdoh was present as chief guest. The programme was organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in collaboration with the Office of the District Transport Officer. Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh highlighted on the safe monitoring tips and safety measures which greatly contributes to road safety and thereby preventing the loss of precious lives due to road accidents. He further asserted that self awareness and self discipline is one of the most important ways to avoid road accidents. Lyngdoh suggested the officials of Public Works Department (Roads) to take proper care of the roads and also to take precautionary measures to remove hanging boulders on national highway which poses a great risk to commuters while travelling. During the function, the chief guest also launched the Vahan 4.0 and Sarathi 4.0 for the districts of Garo Hills region. It may be mentioned that Vahan 4.0 and Sarathi 4.0 is an online based software application for Registration of Vehicles and issuance of Driving License which is aimed to improve the existing system. The application has been designed and develop by National Informatics Centre, Transport Division, New Delhi.

Nepali school celebrates diamond jubilee
SHILLONG: The year-long diamond jubilee celebration of Nongthymmai Nepali Higher Secondary School came to an end on August 12. The chief guest on the occasion was HomLal Joshi, a senior member of the village and the school, who was associated with the school since its inception in 1957. The day-long closing function commenced with a welcome address by the principal, Satyam Gurung, followed by speeches from the secretary and president of the Managing Committee. To celebrate the day, the students of the school showcased their talent by presenting multi lingual cultural show of dance and songs. To commemorate this historic milestone of the school, a multi-lingual diamond jubilee magazine titled– Rainbow was released by the chief guest. Another highlight of the function was felicitation of the oldest alumni of the school and family members of founding members and others who had contributed substantially in the progress of the school.
