SHILLONG: The North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned as many as five projects for creation of water bodies in the Garo Hills region.
In June this year, the NEC sanctioned a project for the construction of an embankment-cum road including sluice gates and protection work on the left bank of the river Galwang on the Mandagre-Salsella Balachanda road at Haldibari in West Garo Hills district.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1040 lakh and the date fixed for completion is June 2019.
In addition, an integrated programme for water impounding and creation of a water body for recharging catchment areas, restoring depleting water table and improving river hydrology at Matkolgre village across Sona stream, South West Garo Hills district has also been sanctioned by the NEC this year at a budget of Rs 536 lakh.
The first installment has been released and it is scheduled to be completed next year.
A similar project has been sanctioned at Belbari village across the Wanangjhora stream in South West Garo Hills district at a cost of Rs 308 lakh.
NEC has also sanctioned two more projects of integrated programme for water impounding and creation of a water body for recharging catchment areas at Chandragre village across the Ringre stream in West Garo Hills and at Chondon Nokat village across the Chondon stream in South West Garo Hills. The two projects will be implemented at a cost of Rs 179 lakh and Rs 209 lakh respectively.
The first installments for both the projects have been released. They are scheduled to be completed next year.
