UDP to announce first list of poll candidates soon: Lanong

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) which is expected to give the ruling Congress a tough fight in 2018 Assembly elections, is set to soon announce its first list of poll candidates soon.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Tuesday, UDP’s working president Bindo Lanong said that the   first list of party candidates would be announced any time. He, however, did not elaborate further on the number of candidates to be announced in the first list.

On being asked about the UDP forging alliance with Garo National Council (GNC) for 24 seats in Garo Hills region, Lanong said that the deliberations were going on very smoothly.

The UDP has finalised around four seats in which they would contest the elections in Garo Hills besides 12 others seats where it wants to field its candidates.

He further said that they were trying to finalise the alliance with the GNC at the earliest

It may be mentioned that the UDP has forged a similar alliance with    the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPD) for 36  seats in Khasi Hills region.
