Board to discuss road closure in cantonment areas

SHILLONG: The issue of closure of roads for civil population in cantonment areas of the city will be discussed and deliberated at the ordinary meeting of the Shillong Cantonment Board on August 30.
The director general, defence estates (DG DE) had recently forwarded a copy of the defence ministry letter and requested to ensure compliance of the direction contained in paragraph 4 of the letter which stated that roads already closed without following the procedure as delineated in the Cantonments Act, 2006 should be opened forthwith and closed again if such closure was required after following the laid down procedure and obtaining the statutory approval.
Accordingly, the Shillong Cantonment Board had requested the Station Cell to take immediate action to open some roads for public use with immediate effect for compliance of the direction contained in the Ministry of Defence letter including gates erected near the Cantonment Board office approach road and near Bungalow no 12 cantonment over the road under the management of Shillong Cantonment Board classified as C bearing Sy. No 31.
The second one is the gate erected near Hindi Balika Vidyalaya over the road under the management of Shillong Cantonment Board classified as C bearing Sy. No 31.
However, the present status of the roads is that the gates near the Cantonment Board office approach road and near Bungalow number 12 cantonment has been opened for pedestrians throughout the day and partially closed from 6pm to 6am for plying of vehicles and complete closure for plying of vehicles on holidays and Sundays.
On the other hand, the gate erected over the road near the Hindi Balika Vidyalaya has been kept closed.
The matter has been reported to the principal director, defence estates (PDDE), Eastern Command, who has advised to put up the matter before the Board.
