MAWKYRWAT: Shillong MP Vincent H. Pala inaugurated two roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in South West Khasi Hills on Monday.
The 7.98-km Umjarain-Diwah Road was constructed at a cost of Rs 620.15 lakh and the 2.125-km Umjarai-Lawblei Road was Rs 150.57 lakh. Both the roads were funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Rural Development.
Addressing the gathering before inaugurating the Umjarain-Diwah road at Umjarain, 20 km from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Pala said there are still 230 PMGSY roads in Meghalaya which are still pending of which 44 are in West and South West Khasi Hills.
“When we are able to complete all these 44 roads, I believe that the economic condition of people will improve,” Pala said.
Referring to the guidelines of the PMGSY, Pala said, “To bring development, cooperation between the Government and the Chief, Headmen and the people is important because you have to provide land without compensation for PMGSY roads.”
Under the central scheme, there is no fund for land compensation.
The MP also said the Centre has approved construction of a national highway connecting Mawngap-Mawkyrwat and Ranikor and the road from Nongstoin to Maweit to Ranikor.
