SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has minced no words while taking a dig at politicians shifting allegiance, referring to them as “turncoats” who create instability and dislocate the momentum of growth in the state.
“It is these turncoats who have been instrumental in creating instability, dislocating the momentum of development and growth in Meghalaya and preventing the state from realizing its potential,” Sangma said, also blaming the “turncoats” for the political turmoil the state faced since the time of its formation.
Sangma was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme here on Thursday.
“In politics you have heard the most common nomenclature of turncoats from politicians in the Assembly and outside the Assembly,” he said.
The chief minister further said people shifted their allegiance for self-centric interest and were looking at greener pastures, presuming the pastures would satisfy their hunger.
“As a CM I know what is happening, I know who is doing what and that is the strength the party has. Based on that, what is the call that we will be taking will be taken, but I am not going to put the card on the table,” he said.
Sangma observed that the mandate was with the people as he said that the people would have to analyse and assess in that situation.
Observing that the people were saying “enough is enough”, he said that people of the state have been the sufferers of political instability that the state has gone through the decades preceding 2010.
He pointed out that a political turnaround has taken place which will provide the right kind of stability needed for the state. “The present government has been able to fight the forces which create instability in the state,” he said.
“Congress will do all that is necessary to ensure that Meghalaya is not subjected to instability in the future and it will happen,” he said.
