SHILLONG: Two veteran politicians of Meghalaya, SC Marak and Rowell Lyngdoh, who have contested many elections together on Congress tickets, may no longer remain comrade in arms as the latter is more or less certain of not contesting the election as a Congress candidate.
Speaking on the matter, both the leaders said they were Congress MLAs till the end of the term.
“Let us see till the elections as elections have not yet come,” Marak said, adding that nothing can be predicted and they may work together.
A veteran MLA from Mawkyrwat, Lyngdoh has not taken the application form from the party which gives an indication that he would not contest the polls from Congress.
Lyngdoh, who had openly claimed that it was impossible for the Congress to form the government in Meghalaya in 2018, further said he has not collected the application
as he thought of not contesting the polls.
“When elections come and if I feel that I should contest the elections, I will do it,” he said.
Asked about the Congress MLAs who are suspected of leaving the party, Marak said it was not certain whether they would leave the party or not. “So I take it that all of them are Congress MLAs as of now,” he said.
Marak further said it was up to the individuals whether they wanted to stay or leave the party.
Asked about the growing presence of BJP in the state, he said, Meghalaya has its own unique position and thinking and it was difficult to say whether the MLAs who are suspected of leaving the party would actually leave the party.
