‘Outsiders’ preferred over locals, alleges AYC

SHILLONG: A’chik Youth Council has questioned the Meghalaya government for not allotting contracts to indigenous contractors to upgrade educational infrastructure in Garo Hills under the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded project.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, the council’s assistant general secretary, Maxbirth Gabil Momin said that a document furnished through RTI by executive engineer PWD (Buildings), Tura building division, revealed that 51 projects have been sanctioned for upgrade of infrastructure facilities of the educational institutes under Garo Hills region.
He also alleged that one contractor M P. Agarwala got six projects, while another, B K Agarwal, bagged 10 projects. The council has asked the government to ensure that single contractors are not allotted more than two contracts in future.
