SHILLONG: Senior Congress leader and Cabinet Minister Deborah Marak is optimistic that the Congress will perform exceedingly well in the 2018 elections, particularly in Garo Hills.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Marak said there was no alternative and people are looking at the Congress in Garo Hills.
“The Congress has done a lot for the development of the Garo Hills region in the last 5-6 years,” she added.
The minister’s remark comes a day after former home minister RG Lyngdoh reiterated the need to have a viable alternative to the party in next year’s elections.
Reiterating that BJP is not a threat to the Congress in the elections, she said that BJP leaders are only coming from New Delhi and making tall claims before the media.
She also refused to accept that BJP is gaining ground in Meghalaya saying the position of the party would be revealed only after the 2018 elections are held.
The senior leader further added that the party has already started its preparations for the ensuing elections as Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is working hard besides MLAs and party workers have also been directed to work hard for ensuring a win for the Congress in the 2018 polls. “We are fully ready to fight the elections,” she added.
