SHILLONG: The jurisdiction of Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 has now been extended to the district and sub-divisional headquarters.
Earlier, the jurisdiction of the Act was confined only to the municipal areas. A notification for extending the jurisdiction of the Act was issued by the state government recently.
It is believed that extension of the jurisdiction of the Act to rural areas of the state would give the Meghalaya police more teeth to deal with cases of drinking and public nuisance.
The Sadar police station has taken the lead as far as implementation of the Act is concerned. Under the leadership of present officer-in-charge, the police station has collected over Rs 50 lakh in less than two years by imposing fines on accused booked under Section 110 of the Act.
