SHILLONG: The State Cabinet on Wednesday adopted the Meghalaya Energy Conservation (Energy Consumption standards for equipment and appliances) Regulations, 2017, in its bid to support the idea of energy conservation and consumption.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the regulations are in sync with the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and under the new regulation, every electrical equipment and appliance has to conform to the relevant standard as approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Now with a view to reduce energy consumption, manufacturing and selling of only selected equipment and appliances notified by the Centre as mandatory appliances will be permitted.
With this decision, Meghalaya too will be part of the global community to bring down energy consumption and contribute towards energy conservation. Sangma said all government buildings and establishments in the state from will install appliances prescribed under the regulations.
“We will also take measures to replace all existing appliances in sync with the specifications,” he added.
A notification will be issued soon.
However, the regulation will not apply to those electrical equipment which are used for agricultural purposes.
