Tura Don Bosco School to celebrate Diamond Jubilee on Oct 18

TURA: Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, one of the oldest missionary schools in Garo Hills is set to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee on October 18.

The institution was started in 1957 as a lower primary school by Rev. Father Anthony Buccieri SDB, an Italian missionary with the objective to cater to the educational needs of the local population. It was raised to a high school level in 1964.

Later in 1988, the Don Bosco night school was opened to cater to the educational needs of working boys. The present-day higher secondary section was started in the year 2014.

The school has produced many prominent figures and great leaders. Among them include former Lok Sabha Speaker, Late P A Sangma, former ministers in the Meghalaya Government, Late L A Sangma and Late Cyprian R Sangma besides numerous officers, doctors, engineers as well as successful entrepreneurs.

From a simple beginning with a handful of students, the school today has more than 2000 students. The institution has been well known for providing good facilities for games and sports, athletics, music and other curricular activities besides a fair amount of success in board examinations.

During the Diamond Jubilee celebration Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is expected to attend as the Chief Guest, while retired Rev and Bishop of Tura, Andrew R Marak and Salesian Provincial of Guwahati, Fr V M Thomas will attend as the guests of honour. Prominent citizens of Tura, past pupils, parents and students will also be a part of the celebration.
