SHILLONG: Meghalaya police on Saturday paid tributes to police martyrs by observing the 58th Police Commemoration Day in the city on Saturday.
Addressing a gathering at the event held at Police Reserve, East Khasi Hills SP Davis R Marak said altogether 383 police personnel laid their lives for their country between September 1, 2016, and August 31, 2017.
They include two martyrs from Meghalaya, Sub-Inspector Shranbuit Suchiang and Havildar Litsing Inghi, he added.
Marak read out the list of paramilitary forces and police personnel who lost their lives on duty in different parts of the country. Over 34,000 police personnel died on duty since independence.
Director General of Police SB Singh along with other senior police officers laid the wreaths at the martyrs’ memorial erected inside the Police Reserve.
Meanwhile, the North Eastern Sector, CRPF also observed Police Commemoration Day.
On the occasion, Prakash D, IGP, NES, CRPF Shillong besides senior officials and jawans also laid wreaths and paid homage at the police memorial.
Every year, the commemoration day is observed on October 21 to remember the 10 CRPF men who died fighting Chinese aggression on October 21, 1959, at Hotspring, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir.
The BSF Meghalaya Frontier paid rich homage to 370 martyrs of all Central Armed Police Forces and State Police Organisations. Fifty-four BSF jawans died on duty.
Sabu A Joseph, Dy Inspector General/PSO laid wreath at the War Memorial and paid homage to the martyrs.
All officers and men of Frontier HQ BSF Meghalaya, Sector HQ Mawpat, and local units were present during the parade. Similar programme was organised at Sector Headquarter Tura.
