AIR to celebrate 20th anniv of Prasar Bharati
SHILLONG: All India Radio, Shillong will host a seminar on Saturday at 1.30pm here at the State Convention Centre, on the occasion of Public Service Broadcasting Day and in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Prasar Bharati. Director general All India Radio Fayyaz Sheheryar will deliver the key-note address. The topics to be discussed at the seminar include Impact of potentialities of oral media wedded to the cause of service in tribal and remote areas by resource persons Dr. Desmond L Kharmawphlang, Professor and Head, Cultural & Creative Studies, NEHU and Dr. Lalthansangi Associate Professor, Dept. Of Education, Govt. Aizawl College, Aizawl, Hybrid radio for topographically lopsided terrains by resource person KV Ramachandran, DDG (E), AIR, Kohima and Civil disturbance and war reporting vis-a-vis radio news by resource persons Amit Baruah, Resident Editor, The Hindu and Patricia Mukhim, Editor, The Shillong Times and noted columnist. The last session of the programme will be an interaction with the audience.

Lesson on customs at Wangala handicrafts fair
TURA: Boston Marak, the chief executive member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), inaugurated the handicrafts exhibition at the venue of the 100 Drums Wangala Festival and Cultural Extravaganza at Asanang on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, Marak said a person is identified by the culture and traditions of the society they belong to and “it is the customs which guide people to uphold the rich cultural traditions of our forefathers”. “Culture is not static and we should eliminate those practices which are detrimental to our society,” he told the gathering at the exhibition that is organised by the District Commerce and Industries Centre, Tura, and Gaj Yatra by Wildlife Trust of India near Tura.The CEM urged locals to preserve and protect the environment of Garo Hills. He also spoke about the importance of preserving the age-old system of Nokmaship and Sordarship. Later, he distributed prizes among the winners of Wednesday’s indigenous games.

IIM hosts RBI’s outreach programme
SHILLONG: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong hosted a delegation of eminent personalities from the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of India as part of RBI’s Outreach Program on November 9. The event was conducted with the aim of discussing the Monetary Policy Report which was published in October 2017. The institute welcomed Dr. M D Patra, Executive Director and Member of the Monetary Policy Committee, Dr. Praggya Das, Director, RBI, Dr. Pratik Mitra, Director, RBI and a number of honorary delegates from the RBI to share their insights on India’s monetary policy and other policy initiatives by the RBI. The panel shared their valuable experiences on monetary policy and Fiscal policy co-ordination, growth rate and inflation balance, and the role of financial markets in understanding the expectations from the economy. The challenges and impediments faced while satisfying all the stakeholders were also discussed and role of investment in GDP growth was looked at in detail.

Indo- Bangla joint training exercise
SHILLONG: The Indo-Bangladesh Command Post Exercise MILAP 2017 as part of Exercise SAMPRITI 2017 will culminate on November 11, after a six- day joint training that commenced on November 6, with a closing ceremony at Umroi cantonment. The cadets were given training on understanding of transnational terrorism, developing interoperability and conduct of joint tactical operations. A total of 14 officers from Bangladesh Army and 20 officers from the Indian Army have been handpicked to undergo the black board exercise at Umroi Cantonment. Brigadier General Md Mainur Rahman of the Bangladesh Army is the contingent commander from the Bangladeshi Army side and Brig S Sanjay is leading the Indian Army contingent.

State Award for Handicraft Artisans
Shillong: The Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Roshan Warjri has urged youths of the State to train in different skills as government jobs are getting scarce. The minister spoke at the valedictory function of skill development training program on Thursday and handed out certificates for the State Award for Handicraft Artisans and participants of the skill development training programme on packaging to unemployed youth and entrepreneurs. Speaking on the occasion, Warjri said that the project has been instituted by the government to create awareness on different sources of livelihood so that there is no dearth of opportunities in the state.
