SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Ri Bhoi and Raid Nongtung Circle has alleged that Assam is encroaching on Meghalayan territory at Umru village near Tyrso, Raid Nongtung Area Block-II, and wants to set up a police outpost.
The group on Monday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma suggesting that the long-pending dispute between Assam and Meghalaya should be taken up with the Supreme Court or with the Centre if the states cannot resolve the dispute through dialogues.
Addressing reporters here in the city on Monday, HYC Ri Bhoi general secretary Hercules Suting said the encroachment violates the status quo agreement signed by the two states, thereby creating tension within the area under Raid Nongtung.
“The inter-state border dispute is a long-pending and unresolved issue and till date no final solution has been derived nor the issue is being resolved,” he said.
The NGO added that status quo should be maintained if both the state governments choose dialogue for resolving the issue.
“If the Assam government continues to violate the agreement then there is no point for further dialogues.”
Condemning the action of the Assam government, Suting urged the authorities to take necessary and immediate action against such acts and deal with the issue in a serious manner.
