DLSA holds awareness programme

SHILLONG: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Khasi Hills District on Saturday organised a programme at Mawngap, Market area to create awareness amongst the public at large on Domestic Violence and ‘Free Legal Aid Services in the presence of E Kharumnuid, Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills District cum District and Sessions Judge, Shillong.

Shanpru, attached Sub- Inspector, Sohiong Outpost spoke about the various free legal aid services available to the people, the relation between Police and public, POCSO Act, Domestic Violence and various rights and their protection.

The students of the Shillong Law College presented a demonstration on the problems like socio-economic and political faced by the people specially the marginalized section of the society and also enlightened the gathering about the help that can be avail through the District Legal Services Authority and the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority.

With the help of PLV and Legal Aid Counsel and various aspects of Free Legal Aid Services, the Legal Aid counsels presented a street play on crimes against children and specially POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act and the support available with the government to the victim such as victims compensation scheme, counselling, shelter etc., and child marriage.

The Para Legal Volunteers of Lady Keane College presented a street play on domestic violence and enlightened the gathering about the objective of the District Legal Services Authority and the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, the play also depicted the role of PLV and LAC in protecting the victim and the free legal Aid Services available with the Legal Services Authority.

The program was attended by a large number of the residence of Mawngap Village and its nearby villages and ended with a vote of thanks by Miss Ibakordor Thangkhiew, Para Legal Volunteer, Lady Keane College.
