SHILLONG: Cracking down on the contractors who have not started work on various projects despite withdrawing a huge chunk of sanctioned funds, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has filed as many as five FIRs with the Tura police to probe the matter.
West Garo Hills SP Raghavendra Kumar MG said police registered the cases and investigation officers have been assigned.
The FIRs filed by W Ch Marak, Deputy CEM of GHADC, said on October 19 work was allotted to one Abdul Roshido of Namabilla under Balachanda GHADC constituency to construct a guest house under the Special Assistance of Central Plan Schemes 2015-2016.
It is alleged that Roshido withdrew 60 per cent of the sanctioned amount for the work but failed to initiate the work.
In the second FIR, Marak said on October 19, work was allotted to Jenisha A Sangma of Rangsakona under Rangsakona GHADC constituency to construct a footpath at the cost of Rs 10 lakh at Modinagar under the same central scheme.
The complaint alleged that Jenisha too withdrew 60 per cent of the sanctioned amount but failed to initiate the work. Marak lodged another complaint stating that work was allotted to one Aliza Begum of Bholarbhita under Shyamnagar GHADC constituency to construct a community hall at Bholarbhita, West Garo Hills.
Begum withdrew 60 per cent of the sanctioned amount but failed to execute the work.
GHADC chief executive member Boston Marak said these are projects worth around Rs 100 crore under the Special Assistance where the contractors withdrew money but failed to initiate construction work.
“Based on the status reports, I had directed the Deputy CEM to file the FIRs as there are projects which are pending for more than a year,” he said.
