AMPATI: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday laid the foundation stone for an engineering college here, the first in Garo Hills and the second in the state.
The Rs 41-crore project will come up at Kebolpara, around 4km from Ampati.
“The engineering college in Garo Hills will fulfil the ambition of aspiring engineers and usher in socio-economic change,” said Sangma, who was accompanied by School Education and Literacy Minister Deborah Marak.
On criticisms about the move to set up one more engineering college in the state, he said educational institutes would aid the government in finding solutions through innovations.
“We are still a developing state. There are areas in the state which still do not have good roads and lack basic amenities. After five years we will celebrate 50 years of statehood, so we have a lot of things to do to catch up with the rest of the country,” he added.
The chief minister later announced that the foundation for Captain Williamson Technical University in Tura and College of Science and Commerce in Mahendraganj will be laid soon.
Addressing the function, Marak said the government was committed to improving the education sector.
