Guwahati: The alertness of the citizens on Sunday foiled a burgulary attempt at Shyam Jewelry in Police Bazaar during the wee hours.

The personnel of Shillong Sadar Police Station were alerted by alert citizens who noticed unusual movement at the jewelry shop at around 2.10 A.M on Sunday. The police acted swiftly by cordoning the area and on arrival of the owner of the shop, the shutter was opened and the culprits identified as Md Rafik Sheikh, Badus Sheikh and Bisan Mondal all hailing from Sahebganj, Jharkand, were apprehended while they were hiding in the toilet.

During interrogation, the apprehended culprits revealed that they had arrived in Shillong two days ago and stayed in a lodge in Police Bazar and thoroughly surveyed the area near the jewelry shop.

The police strongly suspect that they could be the same gang involved cases of burglary of mobile shops in the Police Bazaar, Jowai and Guwahati and other parts of the country also.

The police have appealed to the general public to help the police in curbing crimes by swiftly informing police of any crime.
