TURA: The 145th Death Anniversary of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, was celebrated at Pa Togan Nengminja Memorial Park at Chisobibra, 14 Kms. away from Williamnagar on Tuesday, according to a government communique.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Boston Ch Marak who was the chief guest on the occasion recalled the contribution of Togan Sangma towards the freedom of the Garo people and said that sacrificing one’s life for the cause of others is the greatest love. He urged parents to groom their children to become brave like Togan Sangma in order to safeguard the interests of the Garos.
Former Director of Art and Culture and Guest of Honor, Dr Julius R Marak spoke at length about how the British troops had invaded Garo Hills and how Togan and his fellow warriors had attacked them resulting in Togan laying down his life for the cause of the Garos. He said, “Today we do not need guns to safeguard our freedom but the most powerful weapon for the purpose is education.” He also urged the people to remain alert as there were threats of social invasion.
Special guest on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, Ram Kumar, lauded the members of the Pa Togan Sangma Memorial Association, for their efforts of keeping the spirit of Togan Sangma alive by organising the death anniversary celebration every year. “It’s really a memorable day for the people of Garo Hills in particular and the state as a whole,” he said.
He also urged the association to include some more events in the anniversary celebration and assured to provide the support and cooperation of the district administration.
