SHILLONG: The Meghalaya SSA School Teachers Association (MSSASA) has threatened to file a writ petition in the court if the state government failed to release the pending salaries and arrears of the teachers by December 20.
The salaries of the teachers have been pending since the past four months while eight months arrears from July 1, 2016 to February 28, 2017, are yet to be released.
The association on Tuesday staged a protest march in the city to press for their demands.
Hundreds of teachers took part in the march which started from Nongthymmai football ground and culminated at additional secretariat parking lot. They carried placards and banners asking school education and literacy minister, Deborah Marak to resign.
Addressing the gathering, MSSASA president Aristotle C Rymbai slammed chief minister Mukul Sangma saying that he is busy distributing M-Tabs among students but unable to release the salary of teachers.
He recalled that teachers have to come out to the streets from time to time to demand their basic rights.
“We have completed our duties as teachers and it is the turn of the government to make sure that our salary is released so that the teachers will not face any problems,” he said.
