TURA: The Chief Minister’s Housing Assistance Programme was officially launched by Meghalaya Housing Minister, Zenith M Sangma on Tuesday at the Dikki-Bandi stadium in the presence of senior Congress legislators, Noverfield R Marak, North Tura MLA, Ashahel D Shira, Rajabala MLA, Sadhiarani Sangma, MDC and Chairperson of GHADC, deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills Ram Singh and Housing director, D Sangma and Secretary, M N Nampui, among others.

Launching the programme, Zenith Sangma said it would provide financial assistance and roofing material to the economically weaker sections of the society and the scheme would be implemented in both rural and urban areas.

The nomenclature of the Meghalaya Affordable Housing Scheme has been changed to Chief Minister Housing Assistance Programme in which the government used to provide CGI sheets to beneficiaries earlier but it was stopped for some time, he informed. The housing scheme in its new avatar will have two components under which the government intends to provide construction materials to the beneficiaries and financial assistance of Rs 75,000, he added.

He further asserted that the selection committee for listing of beneficiaries would be done both at the district and the block level in order to speed up the process of implementation. He urged the beneficiaries to avail maximum benefit out of this scheme provided by the government and ensure decent dwelling homes for their family members.

Earlier, Housing Director D D Sangma delivered the keynote address and highlighted the background and components of the scheme while deputy Commissioner Ram Singh gave the welcome address.
