SHILLONG: Independent MLA David Nongrum, who is set to contest in the upcoming Assembly polls as a Congress candidate, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to make inroads in Meghalaya through backdoor means.
Addressing a gathering at Nongrah on Friday meant for the distribution of SRWP schemes, the independent MLA lambasted BJP over the atrocities against minorities in Madhya Pradesh and other places in the country.
He even warned the people on the agenda of BJP, adding, “I will not sell my soul to the devil.”
Nongrum said BJP will pump in a lot of money in Meghalaya during elections.
Terming the formation of North East Democratic Alliance as a tactic of BJP to penetrate into the region, Nongrum said the party has brought an anti-conversion bill in Jharkhand under which people have to take permission from the Deputy Commissioners for conversion.
He also accused local parties like NPP, UDP and PDF for remaining silent on the issues by saying they probably stay quiet because of Rs 133 crore special grants which were sanctioned by the Centre for the District Councils.
Talking about the strength of the Congress in the North East, Nongrum cited the example of Manipur and said the Congress managed to get 28 MLAs there while BJP managed to secure 21 seats but could form the government only with the help of NPP.
While defending his decision to contest in the polls on Congress ticket, Nongrum stressed that the Congress stands for everyone.
