SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in talks with 4-5 legislators to pursue them to join the party.
Talking to media persons after the meeting of BJP’s state election campaign committee, its chairman AL Hek sounded confident about the MLAs joining the party, which may contest 60 seats.
The former minister, however, refused to divulge details.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders from Delhi will come to the state for campaign.
The BJP leader also defended the delay in the announcement of the candidates saying names would be announced after the Central Election Committee finalises the list.
Responding to queries, he reiterated that isolated cases of atrocities on minorities take place in different parts of the country which is the work of anti social elements and BJP cannot be blamed for it.
He also denied that he had ever termed BJP as a communal party and added that they left the Congress due to the misrule of the Congress.
When asked if they are opportunists, he said, “You can go anywhere to serve the people in a better way.”
Earlier, former South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai too defended the party saying it had three legislators in Meghalaya at one point of time and everything was peaceful in the state. “People of all faiths in Meghalaya live peacefully,” he added.
