TURA: Members of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association along with NGOs and students unions have demanded the immediate release of abducted school teacher from South Garo Hills by suspected Bangladeshi criminals.
There has been no information on the whereabouts of the victim nor arrests of the perpetrators. The assistant upper primary school teacher, Etwilthon D Sangma (42) was kidnapped on Sunday from his home by a gang of five suspected Bangladeshi criminals who barged into his home at 2:40 in the morning, tied up the rest of the family members and took him away. They also stole his motorcycle which was later found abandoned near Dimapara.
The SSA teachers body met the deputy commissioner of South Garo Hills in Baghmara to air their concern over the abduction. The association is calling for the unconditional release of their colleague.
Along with the teachers, organisations including A’chik Youth Council and the Garo Students’ Union, Mindikgre unit, have also given appeals to the perpetrators of the crime to immediately release the teacher.
“Teachers are our mentors and builders of the nation. Such incidents are spreading fear among the teaching fraternity and disrupting the education progress of children. The government must do everything in its possession to end such cross-border crimes,” said AYC leader Maxbitth G Momin in a statement.
The Mindikgre GSU, in the meantime, has put the blame on the Border security Force for failing to check infiltrators and cross border crimes.
“How could the criminal gang so easily cross over, commit their crime and return to their home country without being noticed. This clearly shows the failure of the BSF in its vigil of the sensitive border despite such crimes continuing for years altogether. Manning the border does not mean only stopping the smuggling of cattle,” said Greneth Sangma, Mindikgre GSU president.
