TURA: The house of the former MLA of Rongjeng, Desang Sangma, who is contesting as an NCP candidate this time, was gutted in a fire allegedly caused by short circuit.
The incident took place around 6.15 pm. The house was completely destroyed before the Fire and Emergency Services could arrive.
Rongjeng does not have a fire control unit and fire tenders had to be rushed from Williamnagar, the East Garo Hills district headquarters located about 50 km away.
“We received information as soon as the fire broke out. Fire department personnel were immediately dispatched in a fire tender machine from Rongjeng but it lost control due to speeding and fell into a ditch.
Another vehicle in the Rongjeng unit was down for repairs compelling us to bring other tenders from the town of Williamnagar,” said superintendent of police, EGH, Ringrang TG Momin.
Unfortunately, by the time additional fire tenders arrived the damage had already been done with the inferno destroying the entire house.
