MAWKYRWAT/ SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who addressed twin rallies on Friday, reiterated his claim that the NPP and regional parties were allies of the saffron brigade and projected the Congress as the saviour of the people of Meghalaya.
Sangma, while addressing a gathering in Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, said the BJP would buy “readymade MLAs as it did in Arunachal Pradesh” because the people’s mandate would be against it.
“How many MLAs the BJP will get in the upcoming election in Meghalaya? It does not have the party organisation. But now it is looking at which MLA can be bought like it did in Arunachal Pradesh in which it bought readymade MLAs. It will also count on the numbers of its partners like the NPP, the regional parties and some independent candidates which it has funded because it knows that the party cannot win the election,” Sangma said.
The chief minister’s allegations were followed by the assurance that the Congress would resist the BJP from implementing its agenda in the state. “Who is going to fight against the agenda of the BJP, which is (also) the agenda of RSS? It is only the Congress.”
He harped on the Centre’s decision to declare Good Governance Day on Christmas Day and Digital India Day on Good Friday and said it was part of the RSS’s “one religion nation” agenda.
In Mawsynram, where Sangma was campaigning for party candidate HM Shangpliang, the target of his salvo was UDP, PDF and NPP, the alleged clandestine partners of the BJP in the state.
Admitting that this year’s election was crucial, the chief minister pointed at the need for having a government that ensures, besides development, protection of its people and ‘Jaidbynriew’.
While in Mawkyrwat he predicted a 20-seat win for the party, in Mawsynram, the number was 40.
Sangma said the present government has been able to set a new benchmark of governance by ensuring stability. “The state has suffered because of instability but with the mandate that we got in 2013, we have been able to fight against a menace of the mindset of a few of our politicians who were habitual in contributing to instability in the state”, he said.
According to Sangma, stability has helped the state and people and enabled the state to set a new benchmark of governance, and new benchmark of development.
Syiem targeted
In Mawsynram, Sangma’s acerbic words targeted Congress rebel and local MLA PN Syiem, who is now the chairman of the newly formed People’s Democratic Front (PDF).
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said Syiem got the position of chief executive member in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council after the Congress helped him.
He claimed that Mawsynram was under-developed as Syiem did not take seriously the number of schemes sanctioned for the constituency.
