SHILLONG: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani has lambasted state Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh over the infamous Marvelene Inn incident in which a minor was raped by Mawhati MLA Julias Dorphang.

Addressing a rally at the BSNL quarters in Rynjah on Saturday evening, Irani said while rapists played with the dignity of women in the guesthouse belonging to the home minister, the administration looked the other way and didn’t initiate action.

“The responsibility of the home minister is to protect the people and the dignity of women. What kind of a home minister is Lyngdoh whose son outrages the modesty of women and the police and administration take no action,” she asked.

Irani attacked the Congress government for its inability to provide safe drinking water to the people even as she added that there were villages in Meghalaya where power outages last four days.

The Union Minister alleged that in some areas the people carry their sick relatives to Bangladesh for treatment as health infrastructure in the state leaves a lot to be desired.

Lavishing praise on the Prime Minister, Irani said more than 4 lakh toilets have been built in government schools and 6 core toilets across the country after Narendra Modi came to power.

Asserting that 31 crore bank accounts were opened since 2014, she said the subsidies are directly channeled to the bank accounts of the poor, adding that more than 3 crore women in the country have got LPG connections as promised by the PM.

Earlier, BJP state-in-charge Nalin kohli said the Congress government was ruling the state for the last 15 years during which period a plethora of scams have hit the headlines.
