Election in Williamnagar to be deferred

SHILLONG: The election to Williamnagar constituency will be deferred following the death of NCP candidate Jonathone Sangma.
An election official said if any of the candidates dies before the polls, polling has to be deferred.
Other candidates in the fray are legislator Deborah Marak (Congress), Mahamsing M Sangma (UDP), Marcuise N Marak (NPP), Santhoh R Marak (BJP) and four independents.
CM condemns incident
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma condemned the incident on Sunday. “Deeply saddened to hear about the unexpected loss of Jonathone Sangma. My heartfelt condolences to his near and dear ones. The blood of innocent spilled by the enemies of the state will not disturb peace in Meghalaya,” he posted on a social media forum.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress has also condemned the
“dastardly act”.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely loss of Jonathone N Sangma and his followers in a senseless act of violence. Our heartfelt condolences are with the families of the bereaved,” said MPYC president Richard M Marak.
Marak also hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon. “We the people of Meghalaya will not be cowed by such cowardly acts and we will work together to bring peace and keep that peace,” he said.
