MAWKYRWAT: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has regained Mawkyrwat Assembly seat in South West Khasi Hills after 35 years.
The HSPDP candidate, Renikton L. Tongkhar, won with 6,777 votes, ahead of Congress’s Carness Sohshang by 458 votes.
NPP candidate and former deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh was pushed to the third spot with 4,038 votes and PDF candidate and Mawkyrwat MDC Hadrian Lyngdoh was in the fourth position with 4,009 votes.
The last time the HSPDP won the election from Mawkyrwat was in 1983 when Rowell won the election.
Speaking to reporters after winning the election, Tongkhar thanked his supporters and HSPDP leaders. “I want to send a message to all the people of Mawkyrwat that I am your MLA and I will treat everybody equally, whether they are HSPDP supporters or supporters of other political parties,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Ranikor, incumbent PWD Minister MM Danggo (10,952 votes) retained the seat for the sixth consecutive time after defeating UDP candidate Pius Marwein (8,950).
NPP candidate and former MLA Donkupar Massar was in third position after securing 3,241 votes.
