SHILLONG: Hamletson Dohling, a first time MLA who has been allotted the Urban Affairs department, has expressed the desire to see Shillong as a clean and green city.
Talking to newsmen here on Thursday after assuming charge of the department, Dohling said he will study the functioning of the entire department and take necessary feedback from officers based on which he would prioritise his agenda.
However, his first target, he said, is to make Shillong city clean and green besides ensuring that pending projects are completed.
“I know there are a lot of pending projects in the department and we will work to complete all the projects,” Dohling told reporters, maintaining that he aspires to perform according to the aspirations of the people.
Asked about his promise to oppose the extension of the MUDA to areas like Mylliem, Dohling replied he sticks to his earlier stand and will try his best to ensure that the MUDA’s authority is not extended to areas that fall under the Sixth Schedule.
The urban affairs minister, who was a senior leader of the Khasi Students’ Union, had unsuccessfully contested the 2013 Assembly election as a UDP candidate from Mylliem.
Dohling contested the 2018 Assembly polls on a People’s Democratic Front (PDF) ticket and edged past Congress heavyweight and former urban affairs minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh from Mylliem by a margin of 465 votes.
