TURA: Three time GHADC MDC and former CEM, Denang T Sangma was elected unopposed as the new Chairman of the Council on Wednesday in an election which was devoid of any voting process as none from the ruling coalition or the opposition camp putting up any other recommendations.

Like on the first day of the session on Tuesday, opposition MDCs chose to stay away with none of the opposition benches being occupied.

Denang was recommended by BJP MDC from Dalu, Kurosh M Marak and seconded by Rongrong MDC, Sukharam K Sangma.

Soon after GHADC Deputy Chairman, Metrinson G Momin declared Denang as the unopposed Council Chairman he was escorted to his Chair by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Dipul R Marak and senior most MDC, Nripendra Koch.

Addressing the House after taking his Chair, the new Chairman thanked his colleagues from the Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) as well as the opposition MDCs for having faith in him and not putting up any other recommendations.

“This prestigious House will be conducted with dignity and decorum by me. I thank you all for trusting me,” he said.

Reminding that he would not be able to run the GHADC all alone, Denang sought the support of all the MDCs, both ruling and the Opposition, to work for the welfare of the people.

“We have to work together for the people of Garo Hills by way of making suitable rules to run the GHADC,” he added.

GHADC CEM, Dipul R Marak said that the Executive Committee (EC) was very lucky to have an unopposed election.

“To be elected unopposed is evidence that even the opposition is satisfied with Denang. He is mature and knows the A’chik tradition. He is one who possesses the know-how to run the Council,” the CEM said and expressed high hopes that he will lead the house in a just manner.

Earlier, soon after Denang was officially declared as the new Chairman, Rongrong MDC, Sukharam K Sangma was the first to congratulate him and expressed confidence that the three-time consecutive MDC and former CEM’s experience would help them to run the House in the best interests of the people.

Sukharam was followed by NPP MDC from Damas, Dolly K Sangma, Shyamnagar NPP MDC, S G Esmatur Mominin and Silkigre MDC, Augustine R Marak who all expressed well wishes to the new Chairman and reposed faith in his able leadership to take the house forward.
