SHILLONG: The state Cabinet has decided to provide 10 per cent reservation for women for sub-inspectors and constables in the unarmed branch of the Meghalaya Police.
The decision was taken after amending Section 29 of the Meghalaya Police Act.
“There is a big concern about rising crime against women and children and keeping that in mind, we discussed the issue at length in the Cabinet,” Home Minister James Sangma said.
Asserting that there was no reservation for women in the police, earlier he said the department has strong representation of women based on merits but the government thought that the police need more women.
