SHILLONG: The state government has set the ball rolling for hosting the 2022 National Games with the first meeting of the Games Organising Committee taking place here on Friday.
“We have to be ready as we don’t have time,” Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said, adding that the committee would hold its next meeting shortly.
When asked about the challenges of land acquisition, he agreed that land is a big challenge but the committee would overcome all hurdles.
“We have identified some places and there are people who are coming forward to give their land for the big event,” he added.
Earlier in the meeting, working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John F Kharshiing, said there will be tremendous all round transformation and opportunity for the youths of Meghalaya and the country as a whole and the 2022 Games would act as a catalyst that would put Meghalaya in the future Olympic map.
“History will talk about Meghalaya before the National Games and a much better Meghalaya after the National Games,” he said.
Working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, Kharshiing also opined that the National Games venues can be transformed into tourist destinations, public parks and recreational areas after the Games.
