TURA: Five people have been detained at Medipathar police station in North Garo Hills after a video of the group molesting a young girl, who appears to be drunk, went viral on social media WhatApps.

Soon after the video went viral, North Garo Hills Police swung into action and took into custody Kaltu K Sangma, a forest guard, Zingachio Ch Momin, Bansilal D Shira, a former Jail Warder, one Tenang, a GNLA surrenderee and ANVC surrenderee, Beking Sangma.

The video which is going viral shows a group of people taking advantage of the drunk girl and partially stripping her in a car. The number plate of a scooty used by the group is also clearly seen in the video.

North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Dalton P Marak said that police went on a search for the accused after they were informed of the video going viral, and were soon able to make the arrest.

“The five people were taken into custody at around 1:30 am this morning. They are yet to reveal much but interrogation is still on,” the district police chief said.

Meanwhile, Social Activist, Jaynie Ningring N Sangma has strongly condemned the act committed on a minor and demanded the strongest of punishments for the accused.

“The child is a minor and must be not more than 13 to 15 years old. Such shameful act on a minor should be condemned by all. We along with different NGOs of the region will take up the matter to demand that stringent punishment is given to the perpetrators of the crime,” Sangma said.

Sangma also informed that the victim is now in the hands of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and that she would be leaving for Resubelpara tomorrow.

“We are also looking at the gangrape angle which cannot be ruled out. We will leave no stone unturned to find out the truth and demand for justice to the minor victim,” she added.
