SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) condemned the recent murders of women in the state and demanded probe into the cases.
In a statement released on Sunday, the CSWO demanded proper investigation and also mentioned that the families of the victims should not be harassed.
“A copy of the postmortem reports should be provided to the family of the deceased by the authorities without delay and should not have them running from pillar to post to get the reports,” CSWO stated.
Recently, a woman named Pooja Prasad was allegedly killed by her in-laws for dowry at Pynthor, East Khasi Hills, a woman in Mawshun under Pynursla C&RD Block was burnt by her husband and another named Fullness Lyngdoh was found with her throat slit in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills.
The CSWO also condemned the frequent ostracisation of women and their children by traditional heads.
The CSWO statement mentioned the case of Sistina Lamare of West Jaintia Hills where some school heads refrained from admitting her children as she had lodged an FIR against some locals for assaulting one of her children. The woman had to approach the SCPCR chairperson for intervention.
In another case, the traditional heads of Quinine village in Ri Bhoi issued verbal diktat in a Dorbar (meeting) that no one should buy anything from the shop of this woman (name withheld) from the village as she refrained from seeking apology as demanded by them.
In another incident in West Jaintia Hills, a family was threatened to be ostracised and warned that all facilities and benefits would be denied as they did not part with their land on which the village head had planned to build a park.
An FIR was filed in this regard but Nartiang police turned the case into breach of peace by both parties when the other was victimised.
“Such violence against women cannot be tolerated and the authorities should check on them strictly and take stringent action against perpetrators as these harms the family, especially children, who should not be witnessing violence and terror,” the CSWO stated.
