Community colleges to provide UGC pay scale

SHILLONG: The upcoming community colleges in the state will provide UGC pay scale to the teachers.

This was informed by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday in Assembly while referring to Ri Bhoi college.

He was replying to a query raised by Congress MLA from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem.

In reply to a question raised by Congress MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Rymbui said the Ri-Bhoi College will be upgraded to a Community College very soon. 

To another  query, the Education Minister said the government has no intention to upgrade Ri-Bhoi College to a Government college. 

As for the facilities of Community College, the Education Minister said the community college will get a one-time grant of Rs 2 crore for infrastructure development. 

Besides Arts and Commerce streams will be introduced. 

Meanwhile, Congress MLA George Lyngdoh expressed concerns over the congestion of colleges as the migration of students from rural to urban areas has created problems and stated that creation of community colleges will solve the problems. 

              Rymbui informed a total of five community colleges will be set up in the rural areas of the state.
Replying to a query by Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, Rymbui said for the recruitment of teachers, the Community Colleges will strictly adhere to UGC norms.
Asked by another Congress MLA HM Shangpliang on the source of funding, Rymbui informed that the government will fund the colleges and the payment will be as per UGC norms.
On the difference between community and government colleges, Rymbui said that while the government colleges are looked after by government, the governing body will look after the community colleges .
