TURA: An organisation from North Garo Hills has alleged that a piggery unit under the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department in a village in West Garo Hills’ Barengapara is posing “serious health hazards” to locals.
In their complaint to the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, the A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum sought a solution to the inconveniences due to the alleged ill-maintained facility at Koinabhui-II village and its unsuitable location.
“Most conflicts between piggery operators and neighbours are related to odour, noise, dust, flies and rodents, pathogens or visual amenity. The unscientific burial of waste in the piggery courtyard coupled with the dumping of filth in the adjoining agricultural lands have polluted groundwater, leading to well water pollution in the locality and also making it difficult for cultivators,” the forum said.
“We request you on behalf of the local people of the area to take upon the matter with the concerned authorities by summoning them for immediate as well as long-term redressal of the aforesaid problem,” it added.
