Synjuk lauds Dohling for various initiatives
SHILLONG: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong, Upper Shillong in its meeting held recently appreciated MLA and Urban Affairs minister Hamlet Dohling for taking up the matter of setting up of a Police Outpost near Umshyrpi Bridge which also falls under PWD Roads with the Home Department.
The Police Outpost will serve and help the people of the area in many ways, and hoped that the outpost will be set up soon, the Synjuk said in a statement issued on Thursday. The Synjuk also thanked Dohling who along with the PHE officers inspected the Rs 33 crore Upper Shillong Water scheme and urged the department to complete the pending work.
SOS Children’s Villages of India celebrates Mother’s Day
SHILLONG: As part of their Mother’s Day celebrations, SOS Children’s Villages of India, a global non-profit organization paid tribute to the SOS mothers with daylong celebrations across 32 Children’s Villages in India.
The event started with a felicitation for all mothers and witnessed the participation of SOS family members in all the 32projects. SOS Children’s Villages were founded by Dr. Hermann Gmeiner, an Austrian, who pioneered the concept of bringing up children without families and parental care. At present, 585 Mothers are busy in bringing over7000 children across 22 states at 32 SOS Children Villages. The celebration also witnessed cultural performances by the children of SOS Shillong. L. N. Momin, Asst. Director, Social Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya and Virginia Mailang, Program Manager, SARA attended the event as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Training for legal volunteers held
JOWAI: The District Legal Service Authority, West Jaintia Hills orgainsed a two day training programme for para legal volunteers and the panel of lawyers in the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office in Jowai on Thursday.
S.C Laloo, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills, P. Syiem, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jowai, P.J Lyngdoh, West Jaintia Hills Chief Judicial Magistrate and Daniel Marbaniang, Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, WJH were also present during the programme. Additional Deputy Commissioner S. C Laloo said that the aim of the programme is to sensitise the PLVs and to further enhance their knowledge regarding their roles and responsibilities. Lyngdoh highlighted the role of the PLVs and encouraged them to reach out to the people especially the ones in need of legal aid. The session includes training on police and public relationships, civil and customary laws including the basic structure of the Indian Constitution.
BSF seizes cattle at border
SHILLONG: With cattle smuggling becoming a regular routine in some parts of the state, BSF troops once again foiled the attempt of cattle smugglers and seized 158 cattle near the zero line along the international border on May 9 and 10.
Acting on a tip-off, BSF troops at Muktapur in West Jaintia Hills, Tuka, Lyngkhat and Shella in East Khasi Hills district, prevented 67 cattle being smuggled to Bangladesh on Tuesday. Similarly, troops deployed at Tuka, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, Muktapur and Shella, seized 95 cattle at the international border on Wednesday. With the early onset of rain and the forthcoming Eid festival, cattle smuggling is increasing day by day as demand has escalated in Bangladesh. To foil such attempts BSF has sent in additional troops to the border areas to strengthen the existing gaps. The BSF has also identified a few cattle corridors in Bangladesh. All the seized cattle have been handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.
10th Edufair to be held in city
SHILLONG: The 10th edition of the Shillong Edufair will be held on May 11-12 from 11:00am to 6:00pm at All Saints Hall in the city.
The Shillong Edu Fair is an initiative taken up by Impact Media – a leading event management group in the region – to bridge the gap between the students and educational institutes of the North East as well as various reputed institutes and universities from across the country. It also serves as a platform for the students to meet representatives of some of the best institutes in the country. This year many well known and reputed universities will participate in the event.
