JOWAI: Six workers were arrested for extracting coal illegally in Mutong village, Jaintia Hills on Monday.
The police and the Executive Magistrate conducted a raid in the area and detected that coal is still extracted illegally despite the NGT ban.
The six labourers, who were arrested have been identified as Thon Bordoloi, Boka Bordoloi, Soshil Medhi, Menu Bordoloi, Anthony Bordoloi and Dipjyoti Laskar.
They were working at a mine belonging to B. Phawa of Ladthadlaboh in Jowai.
The National Green Tribunal had banned illegal coal mining in the state allowing only the already extracted coal to be transported. However, the declaration of coal is higher than the exact quantity and the mine owners are illegally extracting coal in order to meet the quantity as listed by the official on duty for NGT.
