SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) asserted that the state government violated the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression as per Article 19(1) (a) of the Indian Constitution following the government’s suspension on internet.
In a statement issued here, the KHNAM youth wing president, Thomas Passah said the internet ban during the days of agitation has affected students, people seeking employment and other citizens who use the internet daily.
Admitting that there is fake news doing the rounds in social media, he said it is up to the Cyber Crime Department to tackle such problems. “The ban on internet reveals that the state government accepts the failure of the Cyber department and inability to function properly,” he said. In this connection, KHNAM has urged the state government to strengthen and revamp the Cyber Crime Department as per the Cyber laws in the state.
