TURA: The body of a two year old child who was swept away by strong currents from the Zikzak area of South West Garo Hills district has been retrieved from neighbouring Bangladesh on Friday afternoon, a delayed report said.
The infant, Payal Koch, was supposed to follow her mother who had gone to take a bath at a nearby well in Magurmari village on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, the child reportedly headed towards the Rongki River which was barely 100 meters from their residence.
The river at that time had been in spate due to heavy torrential rains.
When the mother noticed that the child was missing a frantic search took place and family members found her slippers by the river bank.
Police alerted villagers and BSF personnel who carried out an extensive search under water but to no avail.
On Friday afternoon, Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG) alerted their counterparts from the BSF about the recovery of an infant’s body across Lokichar village on a tributary of the Jinjiram River that flowed into the country.
Necessary formalities have been conducted to bring the body back to India, informed South West Garo Hills district officials.
