SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the indigenous people of the state and the government to be aware of the spillover effects of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
The final draft of the NRC in Assam will be released on July 30. The objective of the NRC is to remove illegal settlers who have settled in Assam after the year 1971 from the electoral rolls.
This is due to the fact that after 1971, Assam witnessed an increase in the number of illegal immigrants leading to indigenous tribes like Assamese, Bodo, Rabha and Mising becoming outnumbered in their own land.
In a statement issued on Monday, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said that there is a need to have an effective mechanism including the strengthening of entry and exit points to check the entry of illegal immigrants to Meghalaya once the NRC is updated in Assam.
