SHILLONG: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) submitted a petition to Home Minister James Sangma on the frequent use of ‘inappropriate nomenclatures’ for the ‘Sweepers’ Line’.
SNSBH general secretary RL Blah said that it took exception to the nomenclatures for the Sweeper’s Line at Them Iew Mawlong by some journalists and television news readers.
“Such inappropriate and unauthorized nomenclatures include Harijan Colony, Punjabi Lane and so on. The area in question is not a colony, and it is neither a lane nor is it a line,” he said.
He added that the nomenclature or misnomers are misleading and dangerous and therefore unacceptable.
“They are dangerous because they smack of racial and communal tone, tinge or colour and therefore loaded,” Blah said.
He added that the quarters for the employees of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and some other government establishments are located in the Them Iew Mawlong area and as such the government should reconsider issuing an advisory note to these establishments as it deems fit since the said area is a commercialized and congested area which is unfit for residential purposes.
Blah pointed to the hounding of the agitators at Motphran by the police which he termed as an ill-advised step.
“They should understand that the explosion of violent upheaval on May 31 was triggered by the initial reluctance of the police to arrest the culprits who assaulted the three young boys causing them grievous hurt and injuries,” he added.
