NEW DELHI: Wansuk Syiem, the lone Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya, flagged the problems faced by NEIGRIHMS in Parliament on Thursday and sough the Health Ministry’s intervention in solving them.
Syiem, who is also a member of the governing council at NEIGRIHMS, conveyed her dismay over the series of problems that have been plaguing the institute for the past several years.
According to a report, the governing body of NEIGRIHMS has not met even once in the last four years affecting the accountability of the institute.
The MP brought to the attention of the Centre on how the state-of-the-art institute is suffering from lack of dynamic leadership.
“It was reported that the director heading NEIGRIHMS remained absent even during the recent strike by doctors which affected the institute and inconvenienced scores of patients from all over the region,” she said.
Media reports also said the administrative post of deputy director is now manned by an engineer. “The role of deputy director assumes significance in the absence of the director who normally comes on short duration,” she said.
Demanding the Health Ministry’s intervention, Syiem said, “Failing this, the prestigious institute named after Indira Gandhi will lose people’s faith.”
The MP will meet the Health Minister JP Nadda on Friday.
