SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers’ Union (AMDWU) demanded withdrawal of the Labour Code on Social Security, 2018. It may be mentioned that the Centre has proposed labour reforms for streamlining labour laws and ensuring that it is made more efficient.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, joint secretary of the union Wandahun Kharsyntiew said the workers will lose their identity as a union as the Labour Code restricts freedom of association and right to strike.
Similarly, president of the union Elbina Nongkhlaw said the restriction on outsiders is discouraging for the union as the members are mostly uneducated people.
On the other hand, Kharsyntiew said the contribution of 12.5 per cent of wages of the unorganised workers as stated in the code is very high. “Domestic workers are earning very less and they will not be able to contribute12.5 per cent for the fund of welfare board,” she said. Nongkhlaw said domestic workers will take part in a rally on August 2 in Delhi.
